Review: Shandong Mama

Shandong Mama needs no introduction. Mama is known for her Shan Dong dumplings, proven with a runner up title in the Time Out 2014 awards Bang for Buck category.

My eating compatriot and I decided to lunch in the city one day, with me suggesting Shandong Mama. Located in Mid City Arcade, this dumpling joint was a typical casual Asian eatery. No fuss, no frills - you sit down, you get a menu, you order and your food arrives in a timely fashion. You can easily finish a meal in under an hour - perfect for those office lunch breaks.

Greediness got the better of us and we ordered three dumplings and one appetiser:

Cecconi's Flinders Lane Restaurant & Cellar Bar

I was invited to Cecconi's for their relaunch and to try their new seasonal menu recently.

At the door, I was greeted by an array of canapes and drinks at the door, ranging from smooth velvety sweet corn veloute to melt-in-your-mouth pan-seared scallops served on a fancy spoon. With one hand holding a glass of Aperol Spritz and the other, a mouth watering San Daniele prosciutto-wrapped grissini, you could tell this was going to be a night to remember.

The restaurant now features a clean, contemporary feel, thanks to the work of Mollard Interiors. The open space kitchen was a stage in its own right. There was also a sense of home in the restaurant, with family photos featured prominently on a wall.

Now on to the food! The first course served was a risotto, freshly shaved black truffles, parmesan and truffle oil. There was a generous serve of shaved black truffles that provided an earthy taste, and the risotto was well-done.

This was followed by a Chatham Island Blue Cod with Confit Tomato, Fennel, Fried Zucchini Flower and Aged Balsamic. The cod was amazing - perfectly cooked and seasoned and a dish strong enough to enjoy on its own. The accompanying zucchini flower was done beautifully - light and crispy.

The next dish was Twice-Cooked Duck, Sweet Potato Puree and Lime. I really enjoyed the combination of the well-done duck and the velvety sweet potato puree. The lime added a little zing after-taste, which I thought was rather interesting.

The night finished with two types of dessert - Formaggio - with pear, dried fruits, quince paste, crackers and Caramel Pannacotta, wild fig cake, macadamia ice-cream.

I particularly enjoyed the pannacotta - the flavours were balanced really well and I cleaned up the glass in seconds. From someone that is not a huge fan of figs, that is saying a lot about this dessert!

The relaunched Cecconi reinforces that it will always do what it does best -- fine Italian food with a touch of class.

* Special thanks to Tim O'Connor for the great photos

Review: Yering Station

I was lucky enough to be invited to a work lunch at Yarra Valley recently where we took our clients out for a day trip. After a tour and tasting at Domaine Chandon, we settled at Yering Station for lunch.

We ordered the following entrees to share:
- Cured salmon and kingfish, lime and radish, campari dressing
- Scallops, black pudding, pea puree, pear chutney
- Verjuice rabbit rillettes, brioche, sweet garlic, baby herbs

To drink, the 2010 Yering Station Reserve Shiraz Viognier.

For my main, I had the special of the day which was Whiting and salmon tortellini.
Didn't manage to get dessert as none of my lunch companions had a sweet tooth..

Review: Sosumi Japanese Restaurant

Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you I looooove Japanese food. There's nothing like a fresh plate of sashimi or a good bowl of unadon to give me an instant boost for the day.

Sosumi was a little bit of a random pick - it was lunchtime, i was hungry and with a little help from urbanspoon, found a restaurant i haven't yet tried.

Sosumi is located close to Swinburne university and according to the owners, had just opened earlier this year. The menu was quite standard, but what caught my eye was black cod fish. I haven't had this in a while so I immediately knew what I was going to order.

We ordered the soft shell crab, takoyaki, black cod fish and the sosumi bento box.

The soft shell crab was crunchy and mostly well-seasoned, although a little small. There were some parts that was a little saltier, but was easily offset by the side salad.

Review: Etto @ South Melbourne - Pasta galore!

First official review!

Now, what better way to start the first review of the year than to blog about a meal with the very person that's encouraged me back on the flog scene?

So Thanh (@ieatthereforeiam) recently invited me to try Etto - a new pasta place in South Melbourne. Located in Clarendon Centre, Etto has a pretty relaxed feel to it, with bright coloured chairs and a tiled feature wall reminding me of an argyle sweater I used to wear (now where did that sweater go..)

2013 - New beginnings!

So it's been a while since our last entry - but I'm excited to say that Makan Makan Melbourne is back on the radar!

There's no shortages of reviews and photos and all things random, and if you're as excited as I am - please give a shout out! I'd love to hear from you  : )

Hakataya Noodle Shop
Shop27b, Sunnybank Plaza
Sunnybank Brisbane
http://www.hakatayanoodle.com/

Ok, so Brisbane is not quite Melbourne but both cities have a Southbank so there! :P MMM doesn't have to be about Melbourne, it can be about Melbourne foodies giving food from other cities a try :)

Hakataya, started in Gold Coast, has to be one of the best ramen shops I have ever eaten at. Not even the ones from Japan compare. So I may be exaggerating a bit but seriously, Hakataya wins over Momotaro, Ramen Ya, Ito's and Ajisen Ramen (full of msg) hands down. Don't even get me started on the over priced try hard ramen from Chocolate Buddha either.

Garage Cafe
221 Berkeley St, Melbourne VIC 3000

www.garagecafe.com.au

When I was first heard of Garage Cafe, I thought it was a really cool concept. Close to Melbourne Uni, this is a cafe inside a big warehouse where on one side there are pool tables and a few car spaces whilst on the other, dark wooden outdoor tables and chairs are placed next to the bar. It's a nice place to hang out I suppose, except for when in winter, the cold wafts in and makes you wish you were curled up at home instead.

Year of the Rabbit

Chinese New Year is almost upon us. In fact, there is only 2 weeks to go. Are many of you celebrating with family?

I love how multicultural Melbourne is. I have noticed that Chinese New Year is always a big event, with multiple locations throwing massive street festivals with food, drinks and entertainment. My favourites are Victoria Street in Richmond which is good for Vietnamese food, Box Hill for Taiwanese and Hong Kong food, and Crown's Riverside Hawker stalls which has a good mix of Asian fares to try.

Update! - a new decade no longer the nought-ies

Happy New Year everyone!! I can't believe it is now 2011. I am still signing off 2010 at work and can't seem to adjust.

It's been so long since I have even looked our blog that I didn't even realise my fellow blogger Shopaholic has updated the look of the site.

It's been ages, but it's also time to revamp this blog.

Will have a think about the next steps in the coming weeks - hopefully will sort things out and reviews will start again by the end of Feb '10.

Until then!

I Scream for Ice CreamLicketty Licks Shop 3, 372 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, Sassafras.

It was a beautiful Saturday. The sun was out and not a cloud was to be seen in the sky. Without a doubt, my one really free Saturday would be wasted if I just sat at home infront of the tv whilst there were so many things going on this weekend. In Box Hill stalls were set up to celebrate the Moon Festival, in Mt Dandenong the annual tulip festival is on, and my other "to-do" list includes the Pixar exhibition at the NGV.

Michael suggested a drive up to Mt Dandenong in his beloved wife aka Integra. I suggested afternoon tea at Miss Marple's but, Miss Marple's being extremely popular, had a loooong waiting time. As soon as we walked out though, any disappointment disappeared as my ice cream radar worked overtime. I'd sniffed out a woman who was walking past with the last bit of her waffle cone.

A few shops down the road, there was an ice cream shop called Licketty Licks selling the "world's best". We stepped inside to find an extremely welcoming and friendly shop owner who immediately made us try 2 types of vanilla ice cream. One was of the Mototo dairy and gluten free variety which wasn't very sweet or tasty. The other was a rich and creamy vanilla ice cream that made my mouth go "oooo i want more!!".

What do you do at 3.30pm, on a relatively warm and windy day?
When you only have half an hour to walk around?
With no one to go around with?

Eating in TGI's always brings me down a trip to memory lane. I've always felt that the TGI concept here is slightly different from the one back home, although their level of service, (sadly) is the same.

The Waiters Restaurant
20 Meyers Place, Melbourne

A colleague invited a few of us to join her for lunch on her birthday. She took us through some back streets where she then led us to a dodgy looking doorway and up with a small flight of stairs. We entered an old school looking dining room where it's as if time had stood still. Apparently there has been renovations but the decor was still 1960's with faded photo prints and old school curtains hanging off the windows.
